Ractopamine is a beta-agonist drug added to feed to promote lean muscle in animals raised for meat. While many countries allow the use of ractopamine within specified limits, including the United States, regulatory agencies in other countries have banned residues of the drug, including those in the European Union, Russia, and China. Neogen’s Ractopamine Lateral Flow Device (LFD) tests are intended to screen cattle and swine samples, and swine and turkey feed samples for the presence of ractopamine. The tests are one-step screening tests that easily detect the presence of ractopamine at set levels. The ractopamine screening test for urine screens at 2.5 parts per billion (ppb); the test for feed screens at 250 ppb. Neogen also offers its Ractopamine Microwell ELISA for urine and tissue testing, which is approved by USDA.
Clenbuterol is a beta agonist with similarities to ractopamine and zilpaterol, but its effects are more potent and longer lasting. Clunbuterol is not approved for use in food producing animals in many countries like the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. FDA lists clenbuterol as a prescription only, restricted-use drug for the treatment of horses. In addition, clenbuterol is a therapeutic drug for asthma, approved for human use in some countries in Europe (Bulgaria and Russia) and Asia (China).
Neogen offers Veratox® for Clenbuterol to test urine, muscle, kidney, liver or serum.
The Alert® for Ractopamine is meant for the qualitative determination of trace quantities of ractopamine in tissue.
Neogen’s® enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) products are for screening purposes only. It is recommended that all suspect samples are confirmed by a quantitative method, such as mass spectrometry.

The Ractopamine lateral flow device (LFD) is designed solely for use in preliminary screening of swine and turkey feed samples. It is a competitive inhibition immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Ractopamine. The Ractopamine LFD provides only a preliminary qualitative analytical test result. Professional judgment should be applied to any test results, particularly when preliminary positive or negative results are used. HPLC-MS or GC-MS are recommended as methods of choice for confirmation of positive results obtained with the Ractopamine LFD.
